This Crumbling Pageant - what our reviewers say!

Friends, when you read a great story, you know that feeling when you talk with others who love it as much as you do? That's what it's like, reading comments posted about This Crumbling Pageant by people who have received the advance copies for review. Everyone - EVERYone - who has seen the book in advance of its launch yesterday has been captivated by the scope, the characters, the intrigue, the drama, the plot-twists, the writing of this beautiful story.

Here are a couple of excerpts from a fabulous review, written by subversa:

I had [chills] before I was finished reading the first chapter, and I blew through this deliciously long tale, the first of a trilogy, in four days.

The interweaving of classic mythology with that of the savage Welsh tradition adds a depth of arcane sorcery and mystery that is irresistible to women who adore a romance shot through with the glittering strands of magic.

This genre bending book combines so many elements I love: magical fantasy, romance, the hero's quest, Regency setting, suspense, mystery, drama, and angst. If you loved the Harry Potter novels and wished there was a similar story for adults, This Crumbling Pageant from storyspringpub is that goldmine.

Thank you, Subversa, for encapsulating so very well what makes this book such a great read!  Read ALL of Sub's review here.

Beyond 31 Days of Monsters - INTERVIEW

Author photo - Lin ThornhillToday we round out our series of author interviews as we hold a chat with Lin Thornhill. Lin has written many stories as well as screenplays; her story Verisimilitude is her contribution to the Thoroughly Modern Monsters anthology.

STORY SPRING: When did you start writing stories? Do you remember the first one you wrote?

LIN: I didn’t write prose until I was in my forties. Before that, I wrote screenplays in my very minimal spare time, with my screenwriter dad as a partner. Yet, I found scriptwriting excruciating. Too often, a film represents the last act of a story already in motion and all attention is riveted to the resolution. But I always want to know about the backstory.

There was a time when I didn’t write. My dad died unexpectedly, and I had never written without a partner. I didn’t quite know how to go forward on my own. Late one night, during a desperate moment of insomnia and a lack of anything new to read, I trolled the internet and discovered an archive of fanfiction. It was eye opening.

My first prose attempt was a piece of fanfiction for a very small Yahoo community. It was six pages long, and having previously only written in screenplay format, I hadn’t a clue how to punctuate dialogue. I dove in nonetheless, and haven’t regretted my choice since.

STORY SPRING: Were you scared of monsters when you were young? How about now?

LIN:
When I was a little girl I was afraid of mummies and werewolves and zombies. Now that I’m an adult, my concept of monsters has changed. I know there are worse things than the fantasy monsters of my imagination. Regrettably, all too often those take human form.

STORY SPRING: Like several stories in Thoroughly Modern Monsters, Verisimilitude features a ‘monster’ that we like very much. However, affable Ben can be exceedingly dangerous when crossed. Could you comment on these two sides to him?

LIN: Ben’s affability is both an echo of his former, human self, and camouflage. Forks is the home ground of the home range he has chosen, and he recognizes the benefits of keeping his relationship to the local community cordial. Ultimately, however, I see him as a solitary territorial predator. When competition crosses the boundaries of his home range, he must defend it and rebuff the threat. This duality is something I would have loved to explore further.

31 Days of Monsters (plus one) - INTERVIEW

LibbyAuthorPicHeadshotYes, friends, it’s interview day again! Our guest today, Libby Weber, is another of the authors who contributed two stories to Thoroughly Modern Monsters. We’ll chat with her today about her stories The Skin of My Teeth and Seeking Single Human Male, No Stakers.

STORY SPRING: When did you start writing stories? Do you remember the first one you wrote?

LIBBY:
I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid, frequently with my own illustrations. One of the first I remember writing was dedicated to my third grade teacher, who always complained about being fat, and it was about a bird who ate too many crackers and had to go on a diet. The first one I vividly remember writing was a middle school assignment. I wrote a supernatural survival story about a plane crashing on a tropical island and trying to find a way off. J.J. Abrams has yet to send me a check.

STORY SPRING: As I read through The Skin of My Teeth, I came to your character Greg, and started laughing. Aside from the obvious reason for the name, has Kafka been influential in your writing?

LIBBY:
Bill Watterson is entirely to blame. After Kafka got a shout-out in Calvin and Hobbes, I wanted to find out who Kafka was and why one didn't want to have dreams inspired by him. I found a copy of The Metamorphosis in the basement, and I was so fascinated that I went on an existential literature kick and devoured all the Kafka and Camus I could get my hands on. When I first envisioned Lifeguard Greg, one of his supernatural powers immediately brought to mind Kafka’s protagonist, and I giggled so much at the idea of naming him after Gregor Samsa that I knew I had to do it. Like many of my silly ideas, it turned out to be a fortuitous choice, because it helped me solidify a number of things about Greg’s character, not least of which, what sort of creature hiding in plain sight would choose a name with that kind of literary baggage.

Lots more Libby under the cut...Collapse )
